Day 433 - 31st May 2008

Yes, it's another day where nothing has happened, and another day when I took yet another picture of something I'm holding.

This is a great new CD, which I just got, and I thought I'd plug on an off day. It's called 'The Rise & Fall Of Responsibility' by The Brigadier.

I think I took a picture of his Christmas album, and this is just as brilliant. You can find it at www.myspace.com/brigadiermusic

There we have it. England play Trinidad tomorrow in another friendly, Beckham is captain again -sadly, this could be the high point of the day.

Day 432 - 30th May 2008

Another picture of something I've been reading, a fairly interesting biography of a reporter.

At the moment, my biography would be rather dull with the lack of anything going on in these parts. I'm not lacking in excitement, but it doesn't make for very interesting reading...

Day 431 - 29th May 2008

My attempts to get better pictures recently have been foiled by poor weather and a lack of anything actually going on.

As a last resort, I took a picture of the article I used for my oral exam, which in a way was significant as it was the last one. Three exams to go then it's all over.

Tomorrow could be good, could be bad - we'll have to wait and see.

Day 430 - 28th May 2008

Scots would call days like today 'dreach' - I would just say it was pretty naf. The landscape covered in mist, the atmosphere made you feel as though you were walking in a cloud and we were all covered in a thin coat of rain for the day.

Not wanting to go to the cinema, and opting for an early night, I passed up on Indiana Jones and stayed in to watch England beat the USA 2-0. This was a good game, Terry and Gerrard putting away the goals - a good strong performance from everyone; this is a good start for the new manager.

Day 429 - 27th May 2008

Oh hell on Earth. I had two oral exams today, Spanish then Italian, within ten minutes of each other. I walked out of one, into the other - not a nice experience.

Frankly, I don't ever want to have to do it again; I think I just about pulled it off, but the Spanish definitely wasn't pretty.

Anyway, that behind me, I desperately needed a good picture of the day. Today's is OK, not that interesting but I quite like the array of colours in the frame there...

It took a long time coming, I've been limping about the place for about an hour and a half but nothing really happened and this is about the best of a poor bunch - maybe better luck shall fall upon me tomorrow. It's exam period however and nothing much goes on at all; everyone is just cooped up revising - me included.

Monday, 26 May 2008

Day 428 - 26th May 2008

Apologies for the recent run of crap pictures, I was playing with the settings on my camera today and ended up with yet another one to add to the turd pile.

I've been cooped up recently though, luckily my cold has all but gone, I'm still not looking forward to having two oral exams tomorrow with a blocked nose.

My toe is still broken, I forgot that I am not a magic healer and that these things don't sort themselves out overnight - thankfully the swelling has gone down a tiny bit and I hope it will have gone down more by the morning. Still limping though...

Sunday, 25 May 2008

Day 427 - 25th May 2008

Personally, I feel quite a lot better today, my cold is on the way out and I can feel my toe starting to heal up - I really need to get myself together before the exams start next week.

I was cheered up a lot by Lewis Hamilton's performance at Monaco today - taking the victory despite a crash and realising a life-long dream; as well as re-taking the lead of the championship.

In fact, this was the best race from Monaco in years, with sudden rain, crashes and of course, a British victory is always a bonus!

Saturday, 24 May 2008

Day 426 - 24th May 2008

My self-imposed quarantine continued today, hopefully any illness I have won't spread - I do feel better today though.

It's time for the biggest sham contest in Europe once more, Eurovision. I would have got a picture of the winners, Russia, or some of the crap ones, but I was impressed by our entry, Andy Abraham, who put in a cracking performance of a sterling song.

Europe, however, was not impressed; only a few points from Ireland and San Marino (of all places) got us a total of 14, compared to the winning song which scored nearly 200 - even Malta didn't vote for us this time.

I haven't got much else to talk about, but I think it's safe to say that Eurovision seems to succeed in splitting eastern and western Europe - the amount of political votes are astonishing, God help us all if Wogan decides to pack it in...

Friday, 23 May 2008

Day 425 - 23th May 2008

No picture taken and a bin full of tissues can only mean one thing - illness. Of course, this is only a common cold but nonetheless I decided that quarantine was the way forwards.

A broken toe and blocked sinuses have not made for the most pleasant of days but it's at times like these that stoicism was invented - tomorrow's the weekend so I'll be able to shake it all off for the exams.

So, the term's worth of lessons ended in a bit of an anti-climax; I'm going to shut up now before I hear cries of 'man flu!'

Thursday, 22 May 2008

Day 424 - 22nd May 2008

This is my second ice sculpture, which I quickly took a picture of before melting it down due to lack of freezer space. A work of art, wouldn't you say?

The other night I think I mentioned ripping off my toenail, well as it happens I also broke it, but only realised once it had swollen up in the morning.

So right now I'm limping about the place, the trip to lessons is painful - luckily it all ends tomorrow...

Wednesday, 21 May 2008

Day 423 - 21st May 2008

Oh dear Lord, I just witnessed the worst sporting outcome anyone ever has to bear - a penalty shoot out. Luckily, tonight's champion's league final between Manchester United and Chelsea was evenly balanced.

In fact, it was a great game, with loads of near misses at both ends all the way to the end of extra time. I wasn't biased to any side, but at the end of the penalties, Ronaldo had missed the only one so far, the burden to take the winning strike was taken up by the ever noble John Terry.

One shot to win the cup, one shot to complete a long journey to Chelsea's only success, and he missed - I still feel for him. Losing 6-5 on penalties is no way to go, but there simply wasn't any other way.

Anyway, time for bed after tonight's thriller - that's enough excitement to last me well into next season!

Tuesday, 20 May 2008

Day 422 - 20th May 2008

Ah Guinness, my old friend. Tonight, I turn to it to ease the intense throbbing pain I've had all afternoon since I ripped my toenail off playing football.

Elsewhere, it was the last Spanish oral lesson today, mercifully - these had always been typically dull and awkward, and despite a slight improvement in the last lesson, it was too little too late and I'm glad to see the back of them.

Hopefully when I wake up in the morning my foot will have healed, at the minute it's fairly painful, but really, really irritating more than anything else.

Monday, 19 May 2008

Day 421 - 19th May 2008

Oh yeah, just when I thought I'd got over the wonderful Stoke promotion, look what I got through the post - a lovely memento of the occasion from my parents.

It was the last French grammar lesson today, and the last time I'll be seeing one of my Italian teachers - a very odd feeling indeed; this week can only get weirder.

Once again, I'm at a loss for things to talk about - maybe tomorrow something might come up.

Sunday, 18 May 2008

Day 420 - 18th May 2008

This ready meal, pictured, was fortunately not mine. Why then, I hear you ask, did I take a picture of it? Well, not only does it not look anything like the picture but the smell emitting from it was fascinating.

It was frankly the worst smell I had ever smelt, ever. If not the worst, then the second worst; I don't even want to begin to describe it - it was so bad I couldn't help but laugh, I thought it might set off the fire alarms.

I've just come back from watching 'No Country For Old Men', the Coen brother's latest Oscar winning film - well worth the awards. Beautifully shot, tense, witty and thought provoking - it has the makings of a modern classic.

The last week of lessons begins tomorrow - better make the most of it...

Saturday, 17 May 2008

Day 419 - 17th May 2008

Such was the dull nature of today, I nearly forgot to do the picture of the day - at least I took a picture earlier on though...

Cup final day, in two words; Portsmouth won. It's tragic that they beat the underdogs Cardiff but it's been a pretty shocking cup otherwise.

I've just played a small part in a concert, and as I was lying in bed I remembered that I had forgotten to write up the picture - back to bed and my book I think. Oh, it's 'The Vesuvius Club' by Mark Gatiss; very entertaining indeed.

Friday, 16 May 2008

Day 418 - 16th May 2008

Cloudier weather came upon us today, and as I type I can feel the night's chill piercing in through the window which incidentally I'd better close, papers are blowing about everywhere...

There, much better. Aside from a couple more birthdays which are on today, I can't say much else has happened - I just watched '3:10 to Yuma' which turned out to be a pretty decent film; time for bed now though.

Thursday, 15 May 2008

Day 417 - 15th May 2008

The sun sets over Lancaster once again, bringing to a close yet another glorious springtime sun-bath. Sadly, from what I hear from the rest of the nation, it might not last much longer...

I hate to cut this short, but it was a truly dull day and it's very, very late indeed - bedtime then.

Wednesday, 14 May 2008

Day 416 - 14th May 2008

More football today, more than yesterday anyway, where we didn't really play much at all despite going out and being invited to join a game. A friendly kickabout was in order and that's what we got - nice.

There's not much left for me to say about today - watching the news has become depressing, earthquakes, floods and even recession are all on the menu tonight; plus Rangers just lost the UEFA cup final.

It all sounds so bad, but I'll be going to bed feeling pretty happy tonight - not for any reason though!

Tuesday, 13 May 2008

Day 415 - 13th May 2008

Goodness only know what happened this year - but all my lessons end next week. I only just found this out as I was doodling away in my book during an oral lesson; much time has passed and what have I done?

Honestly, in Spanish, I would safely say I've taken a step back since I've been here - everything else has been pretty good though; I just can't believe it's all nearly over for the year. How time flies...

I could not find a picture worth taking today, having played a long winded and fruitless game of football, nothing much else has been going on - except for going to bed of course.

Monday, 12 May 2008

Day 414 - 12th May 2008

The one day where I decide to stay up late, what happens to cut the night down even more - a fire alarm! It was, however, a real fire; in a way I'm glad it wasn't just some plonker who burnt his bacon.

It was, in fact, a disposable barbecue which set the bin shed on fire, as pictured. It was 0330 am, not a nice time at all; but I think everyone recovered surprisingly well. I did get a few picture of the massive flames, but not from this high and you couldn't really make it out; so I stuck with a picture of the firemen putting it out instead.

This seems like such a long time ago, hard to believe it was earlier today, but I suppose I have quite literally slept since then...

Otherwise, it's been sunny, relaxed and productive - all in all a pretty good day.

Sunday, 11 May 2008

Day 413 - 11th May 2008

That's right, I kid you not - this is a picture of a car jumping off the end of a runway onto a boat full of cardboard boxes. It can only be the ever controversial Grand Theft Auto of course, and someone I know let me have a go on the new version.

It's pretty good, graphically and physics-wise I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. It is however hugely violent, although I would struggle to see how any of this could affect kids at all - we, for example, were amusing ourselves chopping helicopters in half with bazookas; something you don't really see mush these days...

Aside from this, I must mention that Manchester United won the league again today, pipping Chelsea by two points in a finale which came so close to being decided on goal difference. The same cannot be said of rivals Manchester City though, who lost 8-1 to Middlesbrough - ouch.

It's late, we've been on the x-box for a long time and its already well into tomorrow as it is - goodnight then!

Saturday, 10 May 2008

Day 412 - 10th May 2008

This is the first real picture of the day from the new camera, although there wasn't really much to take - it's been muggy and sunless all day. Still, I'm quite pleased; there's an interesting array of colours there...

Otherwise, I worked today; a rare thing for a Saturday in my world. I hate to talk about bed so soon - but lying down is probably a pretty good idea right now; looks like it's going to be a long hot night.

Friday, 9 May 2008

Day 411 - 9th May 2008

The new camera arrived today, and I made a Stoke city montage when I was playing with all of the effects. That's probably the first and last time I'll be using that one...

The end of an old camera era came today then, as did the end of the week. It's been a funny day really, for reasons far too long to explain - can't wait for the weekend; I think I might bring it on by going to bed right now, goodnight then!

Thursday, 8 May 2008

Day 410 - 8th May 2008

There it lies - my magical ice sculpture. Three days of freezing and careful building came to its climax tonight and I set it up outside for all to see. People kind of looked but not much was going on and it was just melting down slowly without any action. So I went to stand by it and talk to people about it.

It's important to understand that this was in no way serious, and yet the success it had was very interesting indeed. People spoke to me, played along, suggested future projects, I got a chocolate and even an offer of a poem to be written about it.

I made some stuff up about it being 'ever changing' but there is truth behind the jargon - no two groups of people ever saw the same thing twice. Some walked past six, seven, even eight times and just for today, corny as it sounds - I felt happy to have put a smile on people's faces.

That pretty much made a bad day a good one, tomorrow is Friday, so I've got to say I'm feeling pretty good these days!

Wednesday, 7 May 2008

Day 409 - 7th May 2008

This is my first serious attempt at a picture without a screen, apart from yesterday's lame duck of a number plate picture. It's not bad really - not brilliant, but I can live with it until I get a replacement.

Anyway, went to see Iron Man tonight - good film; far outshone what I was expecting so overall a good night out then...

It's late - bed time of course!

Tuesday, 6 May 2008

Day 408 - 6th May 2008

Driving up to, let's say, a job interview and the first thing someone sees about you, written on your car is 'wank'. It's not funny, clever or remotely witty. However, this guy seems to disagree; ugh, personalised number plates make me sick - such a lot of money for a piece of shit!

Otherwise, the sun shone and we went out and played football; in fact - the sun really shone hard and I'm probably going to be red in the face tomorrow.

Talking of red in the face, the Chinese next door have started smoking in the corridors again and I shouted through the door at them. We've complained, argued, and reported them but it just never stops - time for a good old smack in the face.

Monday, 5 May 2008

Day 407 - 5th May 2008

A storm has hit Burma - 10,000 people have been killed. That number is still rising, and I cannot even begin to imagine how many people are in desperate need of help. I am frankly having trouble imagining just quite how many people that really is - it's just such a huge number.

And yet, here in Lancaster; the sun sets with its ever ethereal quality - not a sign of a cyclone anywhere.

It seems so trivial and yet so big, considering I take a picture everyday, but I must mention that my camera is broken - the screen is dead. Luckily it still takes pictures, I just don't know what of. Even luckier, I have a found a better, cheaper alternative - a stroke of luck on all counts; I never really liked this one anyway, I hope all shall be well for the future.

So, there will be pictures for the next few days, just not very good ones as I'll be shooting 'blind'. Good job today's was half-decent then...

Sunday, 4 May 2008

Day 406 - 4th May 2008

A rainbow shines, and Stoke City are a premiership team! Oh my goodness! I still haven't got over it! Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow; I'm speechless. Next year, Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and best of all - we'll be on match of the day! Yeah baby! All these years of support and I always (sort of) knew they'd do something in the end! Promotion at last!

Anyway, my heart rate has gone back down, although I can't help but smile every time someone mentions it on TV - finally we're getting some attention!

As I said, and as I hope you can see, there was a rainbow today too - obviously it rained all day then, but tonight, looking out of my window I couldn't help but notice an orange light, despite the rain. So I went out and would you believe it, a full rainbow had formed - it's so rare to catch one where you can see it end-to-end. I did actually take a more vibrant, colourful and generally better picture, but it sadly didn't contain the rainbow so I had to make a choice; great sunset pictures come every day whereas rainbows simply do not.

Saturday, 3 May 2008

Day 405 - 3rd May 2008

En garde! Avast me hearties! Land ahoy! And so on, and so on. That's right, I went to see some fencing today, and came over all piratey. Not much to say, I didn't really get stabbed if the picture shocked you.

I quite enjoyed the afternoon really though, although some weren't impressed with the questions I was asking - I only wondered if any of the matches were going to end up like in Die Another Day.

Otherwise, it's the big game tomorrow - Stoke vs. Leicester. One point, a draw, 0-0 is all we need to go up; COME ON YOU POTTERS!

Friday, 2 May 2008

Day 404 - 2nd May 2008

Never, never before have I come so close to missing a deadline; 20 seconds from the end - printer troubles amongst other things meant I had to sprint, literally, a mile. I think I maybe came quite close to death at that point.

The picture of the day is maybe a bit weird, but I quite like it - nothing else really came up so it'll have to do.

Tomorrow, well, let's not think about that - to bed with me!

Thursday, 1 May 2008

Day 403 - 1st May 2008

Forget your nukes and guns, make terrorist lick a coffee shot glass like the one I just made and they'll probably just collapse there and there - I know I nearly just did. Ugh; probably the bitterest, most inedible thing I've ever tasted.

Talking of icy shot glasses, normal water ones, ones that look like glass, have proved to be the all time great stress reliever. Basically, you can throw a glass at a wall and the debris just melts away - ingenious!

It's very late, talking in the kitchen is a truly fatal pastime and I've done it again; time for bed methinks.
