Day 1056 – 13th February 2010

Day 1056

It’s yet another food picture today.

I went into Palma to watch the rugby in a bar with real humans, but to avoid the parking fee I parked right on the edge of town. It’s about twenty minutes walk from the city centre if you really bomb it, which is quite a long way to go.

However, the change in scenery as you cross town is something to behold – I found it absolutely compelling.

Along the way, quite far out, I came across this place, ‘Burger Rock’. I needed some lunch before the match, so I thought I’d give it a try. As it happens, it was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had.

The bun wasn’t that good and the burger was quite small – but the whole ensemble tasted so good it didn’t matter. It maybe doesn’t quite top the ‘Wibbly Wobbly’ burgers of Lancaster Uni, but it’s home made nonetheless, and a burger and a drink cost me 3 euros – about half the price.

Almost as important was the actual place, which was tiny and brimming with people, and the warm welcome I received when I went in. Normal people come here, and there aren’t many of those where I’m living.

I also loved the lack of menu – I heard someone ask the owner what kind of stuff they had, and he said ‘Burgers. Cheese or no cheese, onions or no onions. Ketchup and mustard are on the table. I can stick some lettuce on there if you think a burger might actually be healthy'. All at the same price. Brilliant.

There’s a whole community built up around here, not just this place, but everything around. I visited a few places in the area, and whilst they didn’t look as classy as places in the city centre, you’d be happy to keep coming back. The love and affection poured into places like Burger Rock shines through, and I find it reassuring that such places exist to do more than just make money.

I’ll be parking on the edge of town a whole lot more from now on. Especially at lunchtime.
